Sugar Cookie Truffles (1)

November is here, which means it’s time to start thinking about Christmas (it will be here before you know it!). I’m kicking off the holiday baking with one of my most popular recipes—sugar cookie truffles.

These little truffles are sugar cookies rolled up into balls of Christmas goodness. The recipe uses only four ingredients: sugar cookies (duh), cream cheese, white chocolate and sprinkles. It’s the perfect recipe to try when you have leftover cookies!

Why this recipe works

Sugar cookie truffles have to be the easiest recipe on my website because it requires only three ingredients: sugar cookies, cream cheese and melting wafers (sprinkle are optional) This recipe works because it uses sugar cookies that are not soft and chewy. This helps the cookies adhere to the cream cheese and form solid truffles. The recipe also requires a short freezing time so it is easier to dip the truffles in white chocolate. These are the white chocolate melting wafers I use and they are usually found in the baking aisle at your local grocery store. Candy melts work well too and, depending on the holiday, you can use any color sprinkles.

How to Make Sugar Cookie Truffles

It’s really easy to make cookie truffles. It only takes 4 steps!

  1. Crush sugar cookies: Use a food processor to grind the sugar cookies until fine crumbs form. I have this food processor and it works like a charm every time. If you don’t have a food processor, you can place the cookies in a ziplock bag and use a rolling pin to crush the cookies.
  2. Mix in cream cheese: Add cream cheese and pulse again until the “dough” comes together. If the dough is still dry, try adding a teaspoon or two of milk.
  3. Form truffles: Use a cookie scoop to scoop the “dough” into 1-inch balls. Roll and put on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Freeze the cookie truffles for 15 minutes.
  4. Dip in white chocolate: Melt white chocolate (or candy melts). Dip truffles in the melted chocolate, place on parchment paper and add sprinkles if desired.

How to melt white chocolate

White chocolate can be finicky. I usually buy melting wafers at the grocery store (they’re found in the baking aisle). Place wafers in a microwave-safe bowl and melt in the microwave at 50% power level for 30 seconds. Stir the chocolate and microwave again for 20 seconds at 50% power level. Continue until chocolate is smooth.

You can do this process with normal white chocolate chips, however I suggest adding a tablespoon of shortening or coconut oil to help thin out the consistency of the chocolate. Never add water to melted chocolate (see more tips for melting chocolate). While you are dipping the truffles, the chocolate may begin to thicken and harden. If so, return the chocolate to the microwave for an additional 20 seconds and continue working.

Dipping tools come in hand for dipping candies/truffles in chocolate. I own a set and they are a lifesaver. If you dont have dipping tools, place the sugar cookie truffle on a fork to dip and then use a toothpick or knife to remove excess chocolate off the bottom. Place on prepared cookie sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze cookie truffles? Yes! I suggest freezing them after you coated them in white chocolate. If you freeze them before dipping them in chocolate, the truffles will dry out and become crumbly. In an airtight container, layer and stack the sugar cookie truffles between sheets of parchment paper so they don’t stick together. Freeze for up to one month. Defrost in the refrigerator when you are ready to serve. I also like making my Oreo truffles ahead of time and freezing them.

Can I use store bought sugar cookies? Yes! If you use store bought sugar cookies, buy the hard, crunchy kind like these Pepperidge Farm sugar cookies. Soft cookies will not work for the consistency of truffles. If you have time to bake cookies, I highly suggest using my cut-out sugar cookie recipe. You don’t need to chill the dough and you can decorate any leftover cookies or save them to make more truffles!

We all like our sugar cookies now don’t we? Otherwise you wouldn’t be here 😉 Here are a few of my favorite sugar cookie recipes along with a few others from bloggers I love!

  • Easy cut-out sugar cookies are the cookies I decorate every Christmas! Then I use leftover cookies to make these truffles.
  • Frosted sugar cookie bars are good for a crowd and easy to make.

The sugar cookies in the video look store bought. Is that so? Just wondering because I would like to use store bought cookies to save some time. They look delicious!!!

  4. LorraineReply

    Hi these look great!
about how many truffles does the recipe make?
    Thanks so much

    • Haley

Hi Lorraine – This recipe makes about 18 truffles. Enjoy!

  5. KristineReply

How do you get your white chocolate to look so smooth on the truffles? I struggle with dipping things in white chocolate snd i read it has to do with the fat content compared to milk and dark chocolate which always melt and dip perfectly for me. What brand of chocolate do you use? These look amazing!

    • Haley

Hi Kristine! Good question – I used to struggle with this too! I use Ghiradelli white chocolate melting wafers, which you can get them at the grocery store or on Amazon (affiliate link –> http://amzn.to/2ggr8cn). Be sure to keep the chocolate warm, after about 10 minutes it may start to get a little lumpy. You can return the chocolate to the stove if you used a double boiler or the microwave heating in 15 second intervals at 50% power level. I also use dipping tools when possible (affiliate link –> http://amzn.to/2gGn5JL). Hope this helps!

  6. JulieReply

  11. JBReply

Can you use different color candy melts to make them even more festive?

    • Haley

      Absolutely! I love that idea.

  12. Eden PassanteReply

Sugar cookies are my absolute favorite cookie all year round! This sugar cookie truffle looks absolutely divine! Definitely trying this one out!

    • Haley

Thanks, Eden! They are simply delicious 🙂

  13. MaripazReply

Hi! These look wonderful! Maybe it’s a silly question, but what about substituting the cream cheese with frosting? Would that work? Kind of like cake pops?

    • Haley

Hi! That’s a good idea, although cream cheese frosting has a thinner consistency that actual cream cheese so the truffles may not hold their shape as well. If you choose to use cream cheese frosting, I would start with one tablespoon and add then add a teaspoon at a time until you reach a consistency that allows you to roll the truffle dough into balls.

  14. HIldaReply

I love the simplicity of these festive looking cookies. Not sure if I can make them as pretty as yours, but am going to give it a try.

  15. LisaReply

If I use a block of cream cheese for this recipe how many sugar cookies do you think I would need? I’d like to make these but I need a LOT more than 18 truffles 🙂

    • Haley

Hi Lisa! A block of cream cheese has about 16 tablespoons in it so that would make about 5 times the amount of truffles. You would need about 60 cookies. Use your judgement though, the consistency should be somewhat crumbly, but when pressed together the dough forms a ball.

  16. AntoniaReply

    Awesome recipe!

  17. JamieReply

Can I put these in the freezer for a few days so they last longer?

    • Haley

Hi Jamie – Yes, you can! Just let them defrost in the refrigerator before bringing them to room temperature. This will prevent condensation on the shell coating.

  18. kellyReply

random question but since there is cream cheese in them i assume they need to be kept refrigerated, correct?

    • Stef

Hi there! I’m wondering about this too 🙂 Is it ok that they sit out for a few hours?

    • Haley

Hi Stef – It is perfectly okay to keep these truffles out for a few hours. When the sugar in the cookies is combined with cream cheese, it is more difficult for bacteria to grow. If you are going to keep them out longer then I’d say four or five hours, I would refrigerate them when you’re not serving.

  19. JulieReply

These turned out so good! The only sugar cookies I could find were the soft bakery ones so I stuck them in the fridge overnight and it dried them out quite well. I also used the candy melts in blue with white sprinkles and they turned our so cute. Thank you for the recipe. They were super simple to make 🙂

    • Haley

Thank you so much for the sweet words, Julie! I’m glad they were a success 🙂

  20. JWReply

If i make these today , can I freeze them until Xmas eve?

    • Haley

Hi JW – Yes! Just defrost them in the refrigerator so that the shell doesn’t condensate. Then serve at room temperature.

  21. StephanieReply

I made the cookies and am currently having them in the fridge to harden. How long can I leave them in the fridge before frosting them?

    • Haley

Hi Stephanie – The recipe says tp place in the freezer for 15 minutes or the refrigerator for 1 hour. Enjoy!

    • Haley

Hi Stephanie – Sorry, I misread your comment! You can leave them in the fridge for three or four hours. Any longer than that and they will begin to dry out.

  22. StaceyReply

Haley – these are heavenly! I whipped up a batch a couple of days ago, after I made my favorite sugar cookie recipe…and oh my goodness! These are going on my holiday treat list for years to come. Thank you so much for sharing such a delicious idea!

    • Haley

Hi Stacey – Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m so happy you enjoyed the recipe. Have a very merry Christmas!

  23. MarissaReply

Hi, these look amazing and easy!

Do you think I can make these and put them in little boxes as gifts for my co-workers or do they need to be refrigerated?

    thanks! 🙂

    • Haley

Hi Marissa – You can certainly gift these! I wouldn’t let them sit outside the refrigerator for more than 5 or 6 hours as there is cream cheese in the recipe 🙂

  24. Jennifer keenReply

These were so yummy my teenage boys ate every single one of them in just a few hrs .. I’ll continue to use this recipe for my holiday gatherings .

    • Haley

Hi Jennifer – So happy you and your boys enjoyed them. Merry Christmas!

  25. LindsyReply

Do you think shortbread cookies would work? I just got home from the store realizing I grabbed shortbread!

    • Haley

Hi Lindsy – Yes, I believe shortbread cookies would work too! They will be more buttery than sugary, but that sounds delicious to me!

  26. MadalaineReply

What a BRILLIANT idea! I guess you could do this with any of your favorite cookie. YUM! Thanks for the great recipe 😃

  27. MichelleReply

I made these last year at Christmas time and couldn’t wait a whole year to have them again! Making them tomorrow!

    • Haley

I don’t blame you! They are SO good 🙂

  28. Maya ReussReply

    Hi Haley,

I made these tonight and they turned out adorable as well as delicious. Unfortunately a couple of the truffles developed small cracks in the white chocolate. Do you know what might have caused that and how I can prevent it in the future.

    Thanks!

  29. TheresaReply

What can I use since I don’t have a small processor and cream cheese. Can it all be done in a Ziploc or blender ,,help. Happy Holidays🌲🌲

    • Haley

Hi Theresa! You can crush the cookies in a ziplock bag. I like using a rolling pin or the back of a spoon to break the cookies into small pieces.

  30. DorothyReply

My daughter told me about these..going to make for New Years Eve. I was thinking of dusting with silver and gold edible glitter., What do you think, Will it stick as well as sprinkles. Thank you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

  31. David ReamsReply

Made these tonight and they turned out great. I followed the recipe to the exact and had no problems. I allowed my cookie dough to defrost to room temperature (30 minutes), then rolled them into balls. I then cooked the cookies just until the edges started to show a slight color change (10 minutes). If you cook them much longer the cookies will be to hard to roll and will just fall apart, as they will continue to cook after they are removed from the oven.

    • Haley

Thanks for the feedback, David! I’m glad you enjoyed the recipe.

  32. ChrisReply

These look delicious and so much fun to make! Gotta try them! Thanks for sharing your gorgeous recipe 🙂

I just made these very delicious sugar cookie truffles today. They are easy and very tasty however my chocolate cracked around each cookie once it hardened. What caused this? They still taste amazing and are still quite pretty.

  38. Ebr UsamReply

I know this is a year old post, but maybe someone will see this… Have you or anyone tried this with snickerdoodles instead of sugar cookies? Just curious if they’d turn out the same. Has anyone shipped these? Thinking about making them for my family in my cookie boxes to ship. Not sure how they would hold up in shipping. Thanks so much!

  39. Siva MaheshReply

I’m in love with the recipes – especially love “no-bake” option.

  51. TheChefReply

Thank you so much for the post I made them and my family, especially the kids enjoyed them so much.

  52. CiaraReply

I’m wondering, I have a bunch of sugar cookie mix. Can I skip the baking process and just mix that with cream cheese? Or what about frosting, if it’s going to be for kids who are a little picky? Thanks!

    • Haley

Hi Ciara – I don’t think the sugar cookie mix will be sturdy enough to make a cookie truffle. I think they will end up more like cake balls. They will still taste good, just won’t have as much structure. If you do this method, I suggest chilling the dough before rolling it into truffles. Store them in the refrigerator to keep their shape.

  53. JenReply

I love holiday recipes that are easily done with the kids. So easy and absolutely delicious!

  54. Dorothy ReinholdReply

  58. Jacque HastertReply

These truffles have been added to my neighborhood cookie platter list! I can’t wait to bake these and have fun adding all the sprinkles. I know my girls will love helping me.

  59. JudyReply

I used the Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie dry mix, which was 2 cups. I just added a bit of water to the recipe with the cream cheese. Would that be ok to use instead of buying store bought cookies?

  60. ToriReply

Can I use marshmallow fliff instead of cream cheese?

  61. AnnetteReply

Can I use ginger biscuits because they are super crispy?

    • Haley

Hi Annette! Absolutely. I’ll be posting a gingerbread truffle recipe this holiday season that is very similar to this, but uses crunchy gingersnap cookies.
