They told me at pre op to remove all fingernail polish and to not wear any jewelry of any sort. It’s for safety. Especially the jewelry part, for cauterization and possible burning risks for example. I was told nail polish was a no for monitoring purposes. They want as little risk as possible.

I had a scheduled c-section and they didn't say anything prior to the surgery and then I ended up with an emergent/urgent c-section and no one said anything. They had me take off all my jewelry but never mentioned my nails.

I’ve never been told not to have my nails painted. I’ve had 5 c-sections; 4 were planned. I was asked to remove my jewelry for each c-section. For two of my planned c-sections, the nurse just put tape over my earrings (I have my cartilage and tragus pierced). I was also told I couldn’t wear a bra with underwire.

I wasn't told no but they asked when I was prepping for my "emergency" section

I had an emergency c section and my nails weren’t painted ( just my toes were- not one ever mentioned it) so I’m not sure about that but I was asked to take off all jewelry. I have 9 piercings in my ears though so they just taped them instead of having me take them all out

On arrival to the hospital on the day of your operation
You will be seen by an anaesthetist on the ward before your operation. Please ensure that you are not wearing any jewellery, make up, nail polish or fake nails (including shellac or acrylics) on admission.
For example, avoid driving, carrying anything heavy, having sex or doing heavy housework, such as vacuuming, until you feel able to. You will need help with carrying your baby in their car seat and with lifting their pram. Check with your insurance company when you will be covered for driving after a c-section.
Because nail polish prevents the sensor's ability to precisely detect oxygen levels, it can affect the results. The nail is an important area for detecting cyanosis (a bluish discolouration caused by low oxygen levels).
Surgical scrubbing prior to surgery reduces the number of bacteria on the skin, but wearing rings and nail polish on the fingers may reduce the efficacy of scrubbing, as bacteria may remain in microscopic imperfections of nail polish and on the skin beneath rings.
Some swelling after a c-section is completely normal—chalk it up to the IV fluids during surgery and those post-pregnancy hormones—and should go down after a week or so. The more you walk and move around, the more readily your body will get rid of all that extra fluid.
Don't lift anything more than the weight of your newborn for the first six to eight weeks. Do avoid stairs as much as possible (climbing stairs activates your abdominal muscles). Don't have sexual intercourse until you're cleared by your doctor (usually after six weeks).
All nail polish should be removed prior to surgery, including polish on toenails. Patients with long hair should not wear metal hair pins or barrettes. Be sure to remember cases for contacts, glasses or hearing aids.
Do not wear nail varnish or gel nails. Your healthcare team will monitor your fingernails during the birth. This helps check your oxygen levels and your circulation.
There are times when nail polish is not suitable for labour and many ask why they should consider removing nail polish especially when they have spent a lot of money getting their nails done! The policies will vary slightly between hospitals regarding nail polish but most hospitals will have preferred procedures.
You can wear nail polish:) not sure where you heard that, but its not true. At no point during your labor will they be looking at your nails to check your health, I'm telling you that as a nurse! You will need to remove all jewelry as a precaution if possible and if time allows.
